My Daughter Made Me a Dating Profile Without Asking. My First Date Showed Up on a Tractor

I admitted it.

After breakfast, I followed her home in my truck at fifteen miles an hour, behind that Farmall, all the way to Lewisburg. Cars were honking at us the whole way. I didn’t care at all.

In October, she invited me to help with sorghum season.

If you’ve never seen sorghum molasses made, it’s something special. You press the cane, and then you cook the juice down in a long, shallow pan over a wood fire for hours, skimming and stirring until it turns dark and sweet.

We stood over that steaming pan for two days. My arms ached. My clothes smelled like woodsmoke for a week.

I haven’t been that happy in years.

Kayla called last week and asked, very innocently, how the dating site was going.

“I deleted it,” I told her.

“Daddy! Why?”

“Because I don’t need it anymore.”

She screamed so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear.

Darlene and I are going to the beach in March. A real one, in Florida. She says that way, at least one line in my profile will finally be true.
