A Luxury Real Estate Agent Offered Me 40 Million Dollars for My Maui Ranch. I Gave Her One Week to See What She Was Buying

She did call him. I heard her do it, sitting on the tailgate of my truck, in a voice I’d never heard her use before. Calm and certain.
“It’s not for sale, Michael. It never was.”
The easement closed in March. The land trust paid enough to cover the estate taxes and fix every fence on the ranch. The tax reclassification went through in April.
The Akana ranch will be a ranch forever.
Laura flew back to Maui the week it closed. She said it was to make sure the paperwork was right.
The paperwork was perfect. She stayed four days anyway.
On the last night, we rode Lani and my gelding up to the overlook. The sun was going down, the whales were out in the channel, and the whole sky was gold.
“I haven’t had a week off in fifteen years,” she said. “Now I’ve had two. You’re ruining me, Kai.”
“Stay longer,” I said. “Ruin yourself completely.”
She laughed. Then she leaned over from her saddle and kissed me, while the horses stood patiently in the wind like they’d seen it coming.
She opened a small real estate office in Makawao last fall. She only represents families trying to keep their land.
She says the commissions are terrible.
She also says she’s never been happier.
