A Luxury Real Estate Agent Offered Me 40 Million Dollars for My Maui Ranch. I Gave Her One Week to See What She Was Buying

I didn’t say anything for a long time.
Forty million dollars. Enough to pay every tax bill forever. Enough to never worry again.
“Who’s the client?” I asked.
“I can’t say. A tech family from California. They want a private estate. Main house, guest houses, a helipad on the upper pasture.” She held out a folder. “The cattle would have to go, of course.”
Of course.
I looked out at the pasture where my grandfather taught me to rope, at the old koa wood corral his father built.
“Tell you what,” I said. “Stay one week. Live on the ranch. Work it with me. If at the end of the week you still think it should become a helicopter pad, I’ll listen to the offer.”
She laughed.
“You’re serious.”
“Completely.”
She looked at the cattle. At the mountain. At me.
“My client would want me to do my due diligence,” she said slowly. “One week.”
She showed up Monday at 5:30 a.m. in brand-new boots she’d bought in Kahului the night before.
I put her on my grandfather’s old mare, Lani, the gentlest horse on Maui.
By Tuesday, she’d stopped checking her phone. By Wednesday, she was helping me pull a calf out of a gully in the rain, laughing with mud in her hair.
On Thursday night, we sat on the overlook above the ranch and watched the sun go down over the ocean while the sky turned every color there is.
“Can I tell you something?” she said. “And you can’t use it against me in negotiations.”
“I’m a rancher,” I said. “I don’t negotiate. I just say no.”
She smiled. Then she stopped smiling.
“I wasn’t always a real estate agent,” she said. “I grew up on a ranch.”
