She sat down across from me and told me everything in one breath.

Her son, Jamie, was eight. Her ex-husband had joint custody. That morning, he’d picked Jamie up from school in Phoenix for his regular weekend and driven straight to Texas.

He’d filed an emergency custody petition in a Dallas court, claiming Natalie’s job made her an unfit parent. “Constantly absent.” “Flying around the country.” “Unstable schedule.”

The hearing was at nine the next morning. In Dallas.

She’d only just found out. Her lawyer had called from Phoenix.

“If I’m not there, the judge will give him temporary custody,” she said. “And I’m on a plane to Reno. I can’t get a commercial flight to Dallas until tomorrow afternoon.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Blake. I shouldn’t be telling you this. I’ll be fine.”

I stood up and walked to the cockpit door.

“Mike,” I said to the captain. “How much fuel do we have?”

“Enough for anywhere in the country, sir.”

“Change course,” I said. “We’re going to Dallas.”
