I Played Quarterback in the NFL for Twelve Years. Then I Found Out My Financial Advisor Had Stolen Everything

My name is Ryan Calder. I’m 44 years old, and for twelve seasons I played quarterback in the NFL.

Two Pro Bowls. One championship ring I keep in a sock drawer because looking at it makes me feel like I peaked at 33.

I retired with a body that sounds like a bowl of cereal every morning. Two knee surgeries, a rebuilt shoulder, and a back that tells me when it’s going to rain.

So I did what I’d always dreamed of doing. I bought a horse ranch outside Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Twelve hundred acres of meadows and aspens, a river, and twenty quarter horses I knew nothing about.

People in town still ask for selfies at the hardware store. The woman at the coffee shop writes her phone number on my cup about once a week. I always tip her extra and never call.

I wasn’t looking for any of that. I was looking for quiet.

My shoulder had other plans.

Six months after I moved, I tore something lifting a saddle. My surgeon in Denver sent me to a physical therapist in Steamboat.

“She’s the best in the state,” he said. “She’s also not impressed by anybody. Don’t take it personally.”

Her name was Mia Torres. She was 39, with dark curly hair tied back, sharp brown eyes and absolutely no interest in my football career.

At our first session, she pressed her thumb into my shoulder blade until I nearly cried.

“Does that hurt?” she asked.

“No.”

“You’re lying. Quarterbacks always lie. It’s why your shoulders look like this.”

I started looking forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays more than anything else in my life.

Then, one Thursday in October, my debit card got declined at the feed store.

Eleven hundred dollars of hay.

Declined.
