My Little Brother Disappeared for Fifteen Years. He Came Back the Week Our Father Stopped Remembering Either of Us

I didn’t forgive him that night.

I didn’t forgive him that week.

But I didn’t ask him to leave either.

He slept in our old bedroom. He got up at five without being asked and fed the cattle. He fixed the frozen water line in the barn that I’d been ignoring for a month. He was still better with a welder than I’d ever be.

And he sat with Dad.

Every afternoon, he sat at the kitchen table and listened to our father tell the same three stories over and over. The blizzard of 1949. The bull that chased him into the creek. The night he met our mother at a dance in Salida.

Shane laughed at every one of them like it was the first time.

“You remind me of my boy,” Dad told Shane. “My younger one. He went away a long time ago.”

Shane didn’t move.

“What was he like?” he asked quietly.

“Wild,” Dad said, smiling. “Smart. Stubborn as a mule. I always thought he’d come home someday.”

Shane put his face in his hands.

Dad patted his shoulder, the way he used to when we were boys.

“Don’t cry, son,” he said. “Whatever it is, it’s not too late.”
