My Little Brother Disappeared for Fifteen Years. He Came Back the Week Our Father Stopped Remembering Either of Us

The last time I saw Shane, he was 30.

He’d talked Dad into co-signing a business loan for a construction company in Denver. When the company went under, he took eighty thousand dollars from the ranch’s operating account, a check with Dad’s signature on it, and disappeared.

The bank came after the ranch for the loan. We nearly lost everything. Dad refinanced the land and worked until he was seventy-five to pay it off.

He never said Shane’s name again.

Neither did I.

Now my brother was standing in our kitchen, thawing his hands over the woodstove, and my father was offering him coffee like he was a lost traveler.

“I heard about Dad,” Shane said quietly when Dad went to bed. “A friend from high school told me. I didn’t know who else to call. So I didn’t call. I just came.”

“Where have you been?”

“Everywhere,” he said. “Oil fields in North Dakota. A fishing boat in Alaska. Rehab in Arizona. Twice.”

He looked at the floor.

“I’ve been sober six years, Dean. I’ve got a job. I’ve been saving.”

He reached into his duffel bag and pulled out a thick envelope.

“It’s not all of it,” he said. “But it’s forty-one thousand dollars. I’ve been putting it aside for six years.”

I stared at it.

“I’m not here for forgiveness,” Shane said. “I’m here because Dad isn’t going to remember any of this much longer. And I wanted to see him once while he still knew this was his house.”
