My Daughter Hired a Wedding Planner for Our Virginia Vineyard. Three Weeks Before the Wedding, She Found Out Why My Marriage Really Ended

I told Charlotte the truth the next weekend, sitting in the library where she used to do her homework as a little girl.
She cried. She was furious, at me for lying, at her mother for letting me. Then she called Catherine, and they talked for four hours.
On the morning of the wedding, Catherine came to Ashby Hall. She found me in the vineyard and hugged me for the first time in three years.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “For everything you never said.”
Charlotte got married in the stone chapel on a perfect spring afternoon. Her mother sat in the front row. So did I.
Margot ran the entire day like a general. Not one thing went wrong.
At the reception, after the toasts and the cake, after Charlotte and I had our father-daughter dance and she whispered “I’m sorry, Daddy” into my shoulder, I found Margot standing at the edge of the dance floor with her clipboard.
“You did it,” I said.
“You did it,” she said. “I just made sure the flowers were right.”
The band started playing something slow.
I held out my hand.
“Mr. Ashby,” she said, “I’m working.”
“The planner always gets the last dance,” I said. “It’s in the contract.”
“It’s not in the contract.”
“I’m rewriting it.”
She put down the clipboard.
We danced under the string lights at the edge of the vineyard while my daughter watched us from across the floor with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen.
Margot plans weddings at Ashby Hall now. Twelve a year. She says the vineyard is the most romantic venue in Virginia.
She also lives here.
Charlotte says it was her plan all along.
