My Daughter Hired a Wedding Planner for Our Virginia Vineyard. Three Weeks Before the Wedding, She Found Out Why My Marriage Really Ended

I hadn’t cheated on Catherine.
She’d been in love with someone else for years. A man she’d known since college. When she finally told me, she begged me not to tell Charlotte. She was afraid our daughter would never forgive her.
So I let the world believe it was me. I let Catherine’s attorneys tell whatever story they wanted. I paid everything they asked for and never said a word.
Because Charlotte had always been closer to her mother. And I could survive being the villain. I wasn’t sure Charlotte could survive losing her mother.
Margot listened to all of it, sitting on the library floor.
When I finished, she closed the folder.
“You let your own daughter hate you for a year,” she said, “to protect her from the truth.”
“She needed her mother more than she needed me.”
Margot shook her head slowly.
“No,” she said. “She needed both of you. She still does.”
She stood up and handed me the folder.
“You have three weeks,” she said. “Tell her. Or I’ll quit.”
“You’d quit?”
“I don’t plan weddings for families that are lying to each other,” she said. “It always comes out on the dance floor.”
