I’d been on the ranch six weeks.

I’d fallen in love with the land the first morning. I’d fallen in love with her somewhere around the night we pulled that calf out in the rain, both of us covered in mud, laughing like idiots when it finally stood up.

I knew I had to tell her.

I’d planned to tell her on a Sunday. On Saturday, a black SUV came up the ranch road.

Two of my lawyers got out. And my chief operating officer.

They’d been trying to reach me for a week. I’d turned off my phone.

Jess walked out of the barn wiping her hands. She looked at the SUV. At the men in suits.

“Can I help you?” she asked.

“We’re looking for Mr. Sinclair,” one of my lawyers said. “Graham Sinclair. The CEO of Sinclair Capital. We were told he might be here.”

Jess turned around slowly and looked at me.

I’ll never forget the look on her face.

“You’re the investment firm,” she said.
