A Tornado Took My Farmhouse While I Was Inside It. The ER Doctor Who Dug Me Out Wouldn’t Let Me Thank Her

I don’t remember the moment it hit. I remember the noise, and the pressure in my ears, and then a crushing weight across my legs.

When it was over, I was lying in the dark under what used to be my kitchen floor. I couldn’t move my legs. Scout was licking my face. I could smell gas.

I don’t know how long I was there. An hour. Maybe two.

Then I heard voices. Flashlights. Someone shouting my name.

And then a woman’s voice, very close, very calm.

“Tyler? My name is Megan. I’m a doctor. Don’t try to move. We’re going to get you out.”

She talked to me the whole time the firefighters cut through the beams. She asked me about my dog, about my cattle, about my favorite football team. She kept her hand on my shoulder through a gap in the wood.

When they finally pulled me out, it was dark. The air smelled like rain and broken trees. Everything I owned was scattered across a quarter mile of field.

I tried to find her face in the flashlights.

“Thank you,” I said. “Thank you.”

“Thank me by not dying,” she said. “Your leg is broken in two places.”

Then the ambulance doors closed, and she was gone.
