The Bank Gave Me 90 Days to Save My Family’s Iowa Farm. The Woman at the Auction Wasn’t There to Buy It

“I’m Nora Whitfield,” she said, loud enough for everyone to hear. “I’m an attorney representing Mr. Hutchins. As of 8:14 this morning, he has filed for Chapter 12 bankruptcy protection. This sale is subject to the automatic stay. You need to stop.”
The crowd went dead quiet.
The bank’s representative went pale and started making phone calls.
I just stared at her.
I had never seen this woman in my life.
When the crowd finally broke up and the trucks started pulling out, she walked over to me.
“Mr. Hutchins,” she said, “I’m sorry I didn’t call first. There wasn’t time. I need you to sign about forty documents this afternoon to make all of that official.”
“Who are you?” I asked. “Who sent you?”
She smiled for the first time.
“Your mother did,” she said. “Sort of.”
