The Sugar Mill Sued Me After the Flood. Their Attorney Was the Girl I Was Supposed to Marry Twenty-Five Years Ago

“What letters?” I said.

She turned around.

“You promised,” she said. “On the levee, the night before I left. You said you’d write every week until I came home.”

I’d written them. Every week, for a year. Fifty-two letters.

I’d given them to my mother to mail, because I was always in the fields before the post office opened.

My mother never liked Celeste. She thought a girl going to New York would break my heart.

I found the letters three years ago, after my mother passed. In a shoebox in her closet. Unopened. Never sent.

I told Celeste all of it, standing in that conference room with the rain hammering the windows.

She covered her mouth with her hand.

The mill settled the next morning. My lawyer showed them Section 14. They released me from the contract and paid my legal fees to avoid a bigger lawsuit from the other growers.

Celeste withdrew from the case the same day. Then she took two weeks of vacation for the first time in nine years.

She drove down to the farm on Saturday.

I gave her the shoebox. Fifty-two letters, twenty-five years late.

She read every single one on my back porch, while the sun went down over the bayou and the frogs started singing.

When she finished, she put the last letter down and looked at me.

“You still have the ring,” she said. It wasn’t a question.

“In a cigar box,” I said. “In my closet.”

She laughed through her tears. Then she stood up and held out her hand.

“Dance with me, Beau. We missed the fireworks.”

So we danced on the porch under the string lights, with the old Cajun radio station playing and the cane growing back green in the fields behind us.

This spring, she opened a small law practice in Franklin. Farm law. Contracts. Helping growers read the fine print before it’s too late.

The ring is out of the cigar box now.

It’s on her finger.

What would you have done if you’d found those letters? Tell me in the comments.
