I Was About to Sell My Peach Orchard to a Developer. Then a Grandmother and a Seven-Year-Old Boy Knocked on My Door

In January, I called the energy company and told them no.

Then I called my attorney and rewrote my will.

The orchard is going to Eli someday, if he wants it. I’ve set up a 529 college savings plan for him too, because a boy who asks that many questions ought to go to college.

Annie and Eli moved into the farmhouse in the spring. Annie said it was so she wouldn’t have to drive back and forth. Eli said it was because Mr. Tom gets lonely.

Eli is right.

This summer, at eight years old, Eli picked his first full bushel by himself. He made me take a picture of him with it, and Annie framed it and hung it in the kitchen, right next to the picture of Ruthie and me at our first harvest.

For years, I thought this orchard would end with me.

Now I know it was just waiting for the right people to show up on the porch.
