In that trailer were twelve black heifers.

“Your grandfather’s bloodline,” she said. “I kept it pure. Every one of these girls goes straight back to the heifers I bought from you in Billings.”

I couldn’t say anything. I just put my hand on the trailer and looked at them.

She told me the rest over coffee in my kitchen.

Her husband, Jim, had died the year before. Heart attack, out fixing fence. Her kids lived in Denver and Phoenix, and neither one wanted the ranch. She’d sold it to a young couple from Bozeman and was moving into a little house in town.

“But I couldn’t sell these,” she said. “They weren’t really mine. They were always yours. I was just keeping them for you.”

Then she told me why she’d bid so high that day.
