I climbed down slowly.

Amanda was 46 now. She’d been 34 then, my favorite scrub nurse, the one who could hand me an instrument before I knew I needed it.

“How did you find me?” I asked.

“It wasn’t hard,” she said. “You’re the only heart surgeon in California who disappeared to grow guacamole.”

I almost laughed. Almost.

We sat on the porch. I made coffee. My hands weren’t quite steady.

“Why are you here, Amanda?”

She took a long breath.

“Because I’m leaving nursing,” she said. “Twenty-four years. I’m done. And before I go, there’s something I should have told you twelve years ago.”

She reached into her bag and took out an envelope.

“The hospital did an internal review after Lily died,” she said. “You never read it. You were gone before it was finished. The hospital’s lawyers made sure it stayed quiet because of the liability.”

“I know what happened,” I said. “I was there.”

“No,” Amanda said gently. “You don’t.”

She slid the envelope across the table.
